Soil is no dirt!

Nothing can be so far from the truth as referring to the soil as ‘dirt’! Soil is the basis of life and it is very much alive. Alive with microorganisms that even the naked eye can not see or appreciate. There exists an essential microenvironment of its own in the soil that consists of fungi, spiders, bacteria, nematodes, insects, and other billion microorganisms and larger organisms. The most prominent and visible is the earthworm.

A farmer is the custodian of the soil. It is the sole duty of us as farmers to protect and improve soil health. Why only a farmer? It’s the collective responsibility of every human being to be responsible for soil conservation and soil health.

Setting up this farm on no-till, no chemical-based fertilizer or pesticide was based on the idea of sustainable living. Sustainable for everyone, living in harmony with the wildlife – flora, and fauna. Our farm has become a paradise for birds, turtles, frogs, foxes, possums, rabbits, deer, bears, and other insects, critters, and organisms. The specially created pollinator habitats on approx. 1 acre and the abundance of predominantly native flora support sustainable living for all.

“Air, water, and soil are the basis of life. Our life, food, fuel, and shelter depend on its purity. These three elements are interconnected and have a delicate balance between them. Any deviation in one of them impacts the other two and, in turn, severely impacts the human, flora, and fauna. Just like air or water pollution can kill entire humanity, if the soil collapses and dies, it will take humanity with it.”

Franklin D. Roosevelt, wrote a letter to all State Governors on a Uniform Soil Conservation Law on Feb 26, 1937, calling the soil a national asset.

“The nation that destroys its soil destroys itself.”

Franklin D. Roosevelt
