Event on Harnessing Solar Energy

Greenbytes farm is coordinating the event with the help of Washington Borough’s Green Team to make this even possible. The following is the even press release by the Washington Borough’s BID office.

WASHINGTON (July 16, 2016) – Everyone has seen a cooking demonstration; they’re a Solar Punchstaple of farmers’ markets and foodie events. But visitors to the weekly Washington Borough Farmers’ Market on Saturday, July 23, will probably never have seen anything quite like what representatives of Solar Cookers International (SCI) have in store: cooking with only the power of the sun.

“Science & Art of Solar Cooking” will be presented by Dr. Alan Bigelow, Director of Science and representative of SCI to the United Nations, and James Dean Conklin, Media Creative Director of SCI.

This is a free event and is open to the public and will take place throughout the regular hours of the Farmers’ Market, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting.

The demonstration will take food found at the market and cook it in solar thermal cooking technology right in front of visitors’ eyes.

Solar Cookers International works with partners in 133 countries to bring solar cooking solutions to people who cannot afford or who are unable to access fuel for cooking and water purification.

In addition to the cooking demonstration, the duo, accomplished musicians, will make use of solar-powered instruments to perform music in praise of the sun and sustainability. They will also discuss their travels and talk about the importance of sustainability.

The Washington Borough Farmers’ Market runs every Saturday through September 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is located around the Pocket Park at 44 East Washington Avenue (Route 57), Washington, NJ 07882, in the heart of downtown.

The Farmers’ Market is presented by Smith Tractor & Equipment, Inc., St. Luke’s University Health Network, the Washington Diner, WRNJ Radio, and the Washington Business Improvement District.
